At SCULTP’D, one of our missions is to support and lend our services to as many entrepreneurs as possible. To offer support and assist in developing small business owners’ brands is a passion of ours. For this reason, we host Vend ‘N Mix events throughout the year. These events are curated to bring entrepreneurs and their supporters together to network while enjoying music, light bites, raffles, and wine, all while shopping from the featured vendors.
We sat down with one of our featured vendors for our August 26th, 2017 event
, Phillip Thomas owner of Brooklyn Barn. Here is what he had to say about his journey as an entrepreneur:
1. How long have you been in business for yourself?
I started Brooklyn Barn in 2011, but it really wasn’t until 2013 that I really started focusing on apparel. 2015 is when I started doing other vendor market events.
2. Why did you choose to start your own business?
I used to work as a manager at a boutique in Brooklyn Heights called Haystack Home & Body. It was a great shop, and I very much enjoyed my time there. It gave me the confidence and knowledge I needed to begin a path of my own, I truly believe GOD placed me there for my growth. Which is why when I sought out to begin my own business, I named it Brooklyn Barn, it’s a homage to Haystack.
3. What is the most challenging and most rewarding thing about being an entrepreneur?
The most challenging for me is always trying to generate revenue and finding time. As a creative I am always coming up with new ideas that my money and time can’t keep up with. So I really have to prioritize and pace myself. A little bit every day (along with patience) can pay big dividends along the way.
The most rewarding is when I’m at a market event, and I’ll get the one individual that stops at my table and they just get it. They get the positivity I’m trying to convey through the product. They appreciate the design, the artwork, and the quality. With these individuals there’s no hard sell. It is extremely gratifying to see when you come face to face with that appreciation. You see all the hard work that you put in has been recognized. All the designing, meeting with manufacturers, budgeting, planning and running around, its worth it, and it fuels you to keep pushing forward.
4. If you have attended a Vend ‘N Mix event before, what can you say about it?
The overall vibe was great! …. and I just wish the place was bigger! (lol)
5. What’s one benefit of participating in vending events?
Networking! I don’t just mean with other business owners but with customers as well. Overall no matter who you meet, you never really know the true value of any vending event because that connection can lead to any number of possibilities.
6. What modes of advertising are most relevant to your brand?
Social Media, word of mouth, and what I call “walking billboards” (ppl who are wearing Brooklyn Barn apparel). I LOVE the latter because whenever I meet up with someone who has a Brooklyn Barn product and they tell me of the compliments and praise they receive while wearing a t-shirt for example, its priceless!
We are thrilled to feature Brooklyn Barn at our upcoming event on August 26th, 2017 at Rustik Tavern in Brooklyn, NY! Make sure to RSVP below to and stop by his table to view his collection.
